Coordination

Description

The students will gain a basic knowledge about hydraulics dimensioning of water structures. They will understand basic principles of schematization, calculating, simplification and accuracy assessment in engineering practice.

Subject area

Civil Engineering – Hydraulics, Water Structures, Hydrotechnics

Requirements

No prerequisites required. Recommended basic knowledge of fluid mechanics.

Instructors

red. prof. dr. RENATA JECL

Contents

Internal flow in conduits: hydrostatic calculation of steady uniform flow in pressure pipelines (simple and compound pipelines, multi-reservoir problems, sub-pressure in pipelines, pumps in pipelines).

Outflow through openings: outflow through small and large openings, duration of outflow – equalization of water levels.

Free surface flow: steady uniform free surface flow, water surface profiles, hydraulic jump, roughness coefficient determination, composite cross-sections, hydraulically most favourable cross-section.

Filtration theory: Darcy's law of filtration, groundwater capture with various structures and calculation of possible captured quantities.

Practical examples of pipe systems and free surface systems: water supply systems with structures, sewage systems with structures for wastewater drainage.

Management of storm and hinterland waters: dimensioning and construction of various drainage systems, roadside ditches, culverts.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

The student will be able to:

  • Calculate basic water systems (pipelines including pumps and reservoirs) and understand losses in those systems
  • Calculate outflow through vertical openings (including time-dependent cases)
  • Determine groundwater quantity suitable for exploration using specific structures
  • Dimension simple water distribution systems and sewage systems together with their structures
