Coordination

Description

Students will be introduced into basic principles of structural elements, systems and structural assemblies which leads to involvement of the student into the process of engineering design. Students will be able to understand the meaning of individual drawings according to the phase of construction (disposition drawings, formwork drawings, reinforcement drawings, workshop drawings) and will also be able to understand the meaning of basic structural details.

Subject area

Civil Engineering – Structural Elements, Building Systems, Engineering Design, Construction Drawings

Requirements

No prerequisites required. Recommended basic knowledge of descriptive geometry, architectural construction, statics and building materials.

Instructors

red. prof. dr. MIROSLAV PREMROV

Contents

Construction drawings: purpose, specifics, layout, drawing types. Structural details.

Basic structural elements of building structures: roof, floor and wall load-bearing elements, shells, arches and membranes.

Basic structural systems: massive, skeletal and frame systems.

Local and global stability of building structures to vertical and horizontal loads according to the selected structural system; tertiary, secondary and primary structural elements composed of various building materials and their basic properties, recommended dimensions, possible spans.

Design of structural assembly details for specific selected case studies:

  • Horizontal and vertical structural assemblies
  • Building thermal envelope

Emphasis on gaining knowledge on the function of individual structural components in various material implementations, where structural requirements and building physics are taken into account.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognise different structural elements, systems, assemblies and joints
  • Understand the process of engineering design
  • Draw building structure schemes
  • Apply presented procedures in planning of complex structural systems and assemblies

Transferable/key skills:

Communication skills: written expression at written examination and oral expression at oral examination.
