Coordination

Description

The course aims to provide students with comprehension of the basic elements and principles of traffic areas, the basic elements for safe design of traffic areas, application of methods and procedures about planning, design and construction of safe traffic areas, and procedures for traffic-safe design of special infrastructural objects including tunnels.

Subject area

Traffic Engineering – Road Safety, Infrastructure Design, Tunnel Safety, Self-Explaining Roads, Human Factors

Requirements

Recommended basic knowledge in the field of transportation routes design and traffic safety.

Instructors

doc. dr. CHIARA GRUDEN

Contents

  • Concepts of road planning, design and construction
  • Systematics, classification and structure of traffic areas
  • Safety interdependence from intersection layout in road network
  • Characteristics of different traffic modes (motor vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, public transport) from infrastructure and safety perspective
  • Safe landscape planning of traffic areas
  • Principles for modern road infrastructure design: self-explaining and forgiving roads, task complexity, capability, state and risk awareness
  • Human factors and road safety; traffic signs and signals; lighting
  • Special infrastructural objects – tunnels: technical characteristics, traffic safety, design principles
  • Theoretical basis: traffic safety/traffic flow; traffic accidents in tunnels
  • Fire safety in tunnels; rescue and helping plans; security systems
  • Analysis of traffic safety in tunnels

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

  • Explain and classify the basic elements and principles of traffic areas
  • Interpret the basic elements for safe design of traffic areas
  • Apply methods and procedures for planning, design and construction of safe traffic areas
  • Indicate and interpret procedures for traffic-safe design of tunnels

Transferable/key skills:

Knowledge and skills for cooperating in design, construction and maintenance of traffic areas in urban environments. Use of software programmes for defining practical solutions.
