Presentation

The Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and History (Grado en Geografía e Historia) is offered in Spanish and Galician and can be studied in both on‑campus and blended learning modalities.

The curriculum combines:

  • The programme’s multidisciplinary approach unifies subjects from history, art history, and geography in one degree rather than separating them into distinct titles.
  • There is also the option to study via a blended learning modality, combining online materials with scheduled on‑campus or virtual tutorials and evaluation sessions.

Main Objective

This degree provides a multidisciplinary education that integrates knowledge and methods from geography, history, and the humanities. It aims to give students a critical and rational understanding of the past and present of human societies and their spatial contexts — from local (Galicia) to broader European and global perspectives. Students also study art, culture, and territorial dynamics to understand how societies evolve over time and interact with their environments.

Geographical Competencies

  • Understand and analyze territorial and spatial dynamics at local, regional, national, and global levels.
  • Apply cartography, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and spatial analysis techniques to geographic problems.
  • Evaluate the relationship between human societies and the natural environment, including sustainability issues.
  • Conduct geographic research integrating quantitative and qualitative methods.

Historical Competencies

  • Analyze and interpret historical events, processes, and cultural developments critically.
  • Evaluate sources of historical information and use historiographic methods to construct narratives.

  • Apply art history and heritage knowledge in interpreting cultural landscapes and artifacts.

Structure and Distribution of Credits

    Foundational courses in geography, history, social sciences, and research methodology.
  • Compulsory/Core Subjects: 138 ECTS
    Covers key areas such as physical and human geography, historical periods and processes, cultural heritage, cartography, and GIS.
  • Elective Subjects: 24 ECTS
    Allows students to specialize in areas of interest, such as regional studies, art history, or environmental geography.
  • Final Degree Project (TFG): 18 ECTS
    An individual project integrating research and/or applied work in geography, history, or both.
