Grading Scheme
The grading scheme is interpreted as follows:
| Numerical Grade | Qualitative Grade | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 4.9 | Suspenso (Fail) | The student has not achieved the minimum required learning outcomes. |
| 5.0 – 6.9 | Aprobado (Pass) | The student meets the minimum requirements to pass the course. |
| 7.0 – 8.9 | Notable (Good) | The student demonstrates a solid understanding of the subject. |
| 9.0 – 10 | Sobresaliente (Excellent) | The student shows an excellent level of mastery of the subject. |
In addition to these grades, the university may award “Matrícula de Honor” (Honours) to students with outstanding academic performance. This distinction can only be given to students who obtain a grade of 9.0 or higher, and the number of honours awarded is typically limited to a maximum of 5% of the students enrolled in the course (or at least one student if the class is small).
Grades are normally recorded with one decimal point, and the final grade appears both as the numerical value and the corresponding qualitative descriptor on the student’s academic transcript.
