Coordination

Description

The course aims to acquaint students with the basic technical characteristics of individual architectural elements and their integration into building assemblies. Students will understand the functionality, construction and design solutions, and the use of various materials, and will be able to design architectural plans for a more complex individual family house taking into account energy efficiency requirements.

Subject area

Architecture – Architectural Elements, Building Technology, Energy Efficiency, Construction Systems, Building Envelopes

Requirements

Completed course Architectural Elements I. A positive assessment of the seminar paper (min. 51%) is a prerequisite for entry to the written exam.

Instructors

red. prof. dr. VESNA ŽEGARAC LESKOVAR

Contents

  • Architectural design in relation to different structural systems and technologies
  • Function separation: structure, finalization, thermal envelope
  • Earthworks and foundations
  • Wall elements
  • Thermal insulation of buildings and energy efficiency; concept of nearly zero-energy house
  • Moisture protection: methodological approach, remediation methods
  • Sound protection (acoustics)
  • Fire protection: chimneys, vents
  • Roof construction design: construction system, drainage, green roofs
  • Building openings: doors and windows (design, types, construction, installation, energy-efficiency)
  • Finalization: plaster, hanging facades, horizontal surfaces
  • Vertical communication systems: stairs, ramps, elevators

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

  • Use technical knowledge regarding building elements and assemblies in architectural design
  • Summarise basic regulations on architectural elements design from technical and design perspectives
  • Prepare an architectural design for a more complex individual family house
  • Design appropriate project solutions in the architecture plan including facade section detailing

Transferable/key skills:

  • Identify simple and complex design and construction characteristics of architectural elements
  • Use knowledge of architectural drawings in project design work
