Bachelor's of Architecture
Presentation
The Architecture programme at the University of Maribor (Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture) provides comprehensive education in architectural design, urban planning, building technology, and environmental design. Students develop creative and technical skills to design functional and aesthetically compelling buildings and urban spaces, combining artistic vision with structural and engineering knowledge.
The programme is implemented at the FGPA faculty, which has a tradition dating back to 1959 and annually educates more than 600 students, many of them international.
Main Objective
The Architecture programme prepares students for creative and technical work in architectural design, urban planning, and environmental design. Graduates combine artistic vision with structural knowledge to design functional and aesthetically compelling built environments.
Competencies
- Design and develop architectural projects from concept to construction documentation
- Apply urban planning and open space design principles
- Use architectural visualisation and digital design tools
- Evaluate environmental impact of architectural projects
- Integrate structural and building physics requirements into architectural design
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, graduates will be able to design buildings and urban spaces, produce architectural documentation, apply environmental assessment methodologies, and collaborate in interdisciplinary teams on complex construction projects.
Qualification
Graduates of the 1st-cycle Architecture programme receive the academic title Bachelor of Science in Architecture (diplomirani inženir arhitekture / diplomirana inženirka arhitekture, UN).
Graduates of the 2nd-cycle Architecture programme receive the academic title Master of Science in Architecture (magister inženir arhitekture / magistrica inženirka arhitekture).
Structure and Distribution of Credits
The 1st-cycle Architecture programme lasts 3 years and comprises 180 ECTS credits. The 2nd-cycle (master's) programme lasts 2 years and comprises 120 ECTS credits, totalling 300 ECTS for the complete study cycle.
Credits are distributed across compulsory studio courses, lectures, seminars, and an individual thesis/project. The ECTS system enables students to complete part of their studies abroad through Erasmus+ or other mobility programmes.

Admission Requirements
Completed secondary education (matura or equivalent). Portfolio or entrance examination may be required.
Recognition of Prior Learning
The University of Maribor recognises prior learning and credits in accordance with its Regulations on Knowledge and Skill Recognition. Students transferring from other programmes may have completed study obligations recognised based on content, scope and complexity of knowledge.
Credits earned abroad are recognised on the basis of a Learning Agreement signed before the mobility period, following the Lisbon Recognition Convention and ECTS guidelines.
Qualification Requirements
To obtain the degree, students must successfully complete all prescribed study obligations totalling the required number of ECTS credits and defend a final thesis/project. The final project (Studio work) is evaluated by a committee and presented publicly.
Assessment
Grading Scheme
The University of Maribor uses a 10-point grading scale:
- 10 – Excellent (odlično)
- 9 – Very good (prav dobro)
- 8 – Very good (prav dobro)
- 7 – Good (dobro)
- 6 – Satisfactory (zadostno)
- 5 and below – Fail (nezadostno)
The minimum passing grade is 6. Results are also expressed in ECTS grades (A–F) for international comparability.

- Architects in private architectural studios and offices
- Urban planners and spatial designers
- Project managers in construction and real estate
- Building envelope and sustainability consultants
- Interior designers
- Researchers and academics in architecture and built environment
- Public sector officials in spatial planning and urban development
Access to Further Studies
Graduates of the 1st-cycle Architecture programme may continue to the 2nd-cycle (master's) Architecture programme or related master's programmes at the University of Maribor or other universities, subject to the admission requirements of the target programme.
Graduates of the 2nd-cycle may continue to the 3rd-cycle (doctoral) study programme.
